Understanding the Basics
Medicare has a lot of moving parts. Here's a quick overview of the different components. Don't worry — we'll explain everything in detail when you call.
Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease. It's divided into different parts that cover specific services.
Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care. Most people don't pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.
Part B covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. Part B has a monthly premium that most people pay.
Medicare Advantage Plans are offered by private companies approved by Medicare. These plans provide all your Part A and Part B coverage, and usually include prescription drug coverage (Part D) and extra benefits.
Part D adds prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare, some Medicare Cost Plans, some Medicare Private-Fee-for-Service Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans.
Medigap policies help pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. These are sold by private insurance companies.
